History

Biotechnology has opened the way for new and exciting possibilities that will touch every facet of our lives in the 21st century. Because of its importance, the government has identified biotechnology as one of the key areas for development not only to help promoting the industry but also to insure national competitiveness in the high-tech arena. Center for Biotechnology Research, National Taiwan University is devoted to promote the excellence in both biotechnology teaching and research

1994 workshop

National Taiwan University has five colleges that have research and teaching activities related to molecular biology and biotechnology. These colleges include science, engineering, medicine, agriculture, and public health totaling about 190 faculty members and 1000 graduate students. Due to a lack of coordination in these activities, some faculty members have long advocated for forming a center of biotechnology in order to capitalize on teaching and research resources. March 1997, the university decided to set up a committee chaired by Vice President CH Chen to evaluate the feasibility of forming such a center and at the same time asked the committee to design a teaching program for biotechnology. One year later in March 1998, the Executive Council approved a proposal submitted by the committee to form "Preparatory Office" for the Center of Biotechnology, and President Chen designated Professor CY Tsai as the Director of the office. During the preparatory stage, a biotechnology teaching program was designed, approved, and implemented starting September 1998. Finally, the Center for Biotechnology was established in January 1999, and officially approved by the Ministry of Education in June 1999. Professor YM Chen was appointed as the Depute Director.
